Each morning I like to start my day on a positive note and with a positive mindset. There are many ways I like to do it, but there’s one little thing that I like to do every single morning and that boosts my energy right away making me feel extremely awake, even without drinking any coffee! What is it, then? Well, I’m talking about lemon water.

You might not know it, but lemon water is commonly known for its many health benefits, such as:

1 – Improves digestion

Lemon juice stimulates the production of bile by the liver, necessary in the digestion process. Lemons are rich in vitamins and mineral salts, that our body needs to expel toxins accumulated in the digestive system. Lemon’s digestive properties help ease some digestion symptoms, such as heartburn and swelling.

2 – Depurative and diuretic

Water and lemon have a purifying and diuretic effect. Drinking water and lemon help the body get rid of toxins, largely because it stimulates diuresis. This way toxins are expelled more quickly, keeping your urinary system healthy. The citric acid present in the lemon has a maximizing function for the enzymes that stimulate the liver and help to detoxify our body.

3 – Stimulates the immune system

Lemons have a high vitamin C content, useful for preventing flu and healing. They are rich in potassium, which stimulates the functionality of the nerves and the brain. Potassium also helps reducing blood pressure. Vitamin C has anti-inflammatory effects and is used as an aid against asthma and other respiratory symptoms. Furthermore, it improves the absorption of iron by the body. Iron is very important for our immune system to work at its best. Lemons also reduce the amount of mucus produced in our body.

4 – Balances pH levels

Lemons are among the most alkalizing foods. The citric acid contained in them, indeed, does not create acidity in the body, once it has been metabolized. The citric acid and the vitamin C help reduce blood acidity levels. For example, the presence of uric acid in the joints is one of the main causes of inflammation.

5 – Purifies the skin

Vitamin C and the antioxidants contained in lemon help contrasting the damages caused by free radicals and the appearance of wrinkles. Vitamin C is essential for a flawless skin and its alkaline nature kills some types of bacteria responsible for acne. It rejuvenates the skin by acting from within our body.

6 – Energy and good humor

The energy we receive from the food we eat comes from the atoms and the molecules that make it up. Lemon and its juice contain negative ions that give the body more energy during the digestive process. Also, lemon’s aroma has the property of stimulating good mood and reducing anxiety and depression.

7 – Healing

Vitamin C contained in lemon juice stimulates bone, connective tissue and cartilage health. It also has anti-inflammatory properties. Vitamin C contributes to the maintenance of a good health and its recovery after illnesses or injuries.

8 – Freshens breath

Lemon freshens your breath and is a good help against gingivitis. The citric acid contained in lemons, though, can erode the enamel. For this reason, it is advisable to wait for a while before brushing your teeth after drinking lemon water or washing them before drinking it. It is also useful to rinse the mouth with some water after drinking lemon water. To protect the enamel, I recommend drinking it with a straw.

9 – Hydration

Lemon water keeps our body hydrated and supports the lymphatic system. If our body is not sufficiently hydrated, it can show symptoms such as fatigue, stress, lack of immunity defenses, severely insensitive, insomnia and constipation.

10 – Lose weight

Drinking water and lemon can stimulate weight loss. This happens because lemons are rich in pectin, a substance that helps counteract sudden fame. Also, some studies have shown that following an alkalizing diet can help you lose weight faster.

Generally, people suggest using lukewarm water, but personally, I prefer drinking either cold water or using half a lemon from the fridge, it’s all up to you.
