How to make money blogging? This is the question that many people ask themselves before starting a blog or if they already have a blog but they don’t know how to monetize it. At the beginning of my blogging journey, I thought it would’ve taken me years before I could be able to see any money. However, I discovered that making money blogging is not as hard as people might think. It’s true, for many bloggers it took years before they could actually reach a satisfying result. But this happened for one simple reason: they didn’t know how to make their blog profitable.

Anyone who wants to learn how to make money blogging needs to follow a few necessary steps. I’ll explain each step later, but first, let’s give you a quick overview:
- Create your blog (if you don’t have a blog yet, learn how to create one here)
- Write interesting content that attracts readers
- Find a way for people to discover your blog
- Use affiliate links to sell products or services that your readers want
- Build an email list of people who are really interested in what you blog about
- Sell your own products or services that your audience wants
Step 1: Create Your Blog
The first step is to set up your blog. If you want to make money blogging you have to create a profitable blog. Learn how to do it here in 6 simple steps. It won’t take you more than 20 minutes, so what are you waiting for?
Step 2: Write Content That Is Interesting For Your Target Audience
If you want to make money blogging, you need to publish content that people would actually be interested in.
I always say that, in order to make money from your blog, you have to treat it like a real business. That’s why a very important element that every single post should have is WIIFM. This acronym stands for “What’s In It For Me?”. You should basically aim to write a post that your readers can find helpful. Why? Because if you’re not writing something that helps them in some way, they’ll probably ignore your post.
This does not mean that you can’t write about things that you’re passionate about. It simply means that you should look at what you want to write about from a different point of view. So, if, for example, you want to share on your blog the outfits that you wear to work, you could title your post ‘5 outfits ideas that are perfect for work’ and write your content so that it’s reader-oriented and it doesn’t look like a personal diary.
Step 3: Find a way for people to discover your blog
Now that you know how to make your posts interesting for people, you obviously have to find a way for readers to find your blog.
Personally, I focus on 2 main ways to get traffic to my blog at the moment:
- Organic Search
- Social Traffic
Organic Search traffic is basically the traffic you get from people who visit your blog after finding your content through search engines. To understand how important Organic Traffic is, just consider the fact that 93% of online experiences begin with a search engine. However, Organic traffic is also the hardest one to get. It’s something that you need to understand and work on. It’s also something that you build up over time as search engines prefer to show in their first page websites that have been up for a rather long time and that have many posts.
That’s why people that are at the beginning of their blogging journey generally use socials to drive traffic to their blog. This does not mean that new bloggers shouldn’t work on improving their organic traffic. However, social traffic is a great way to drive visitors to your blog, no matter the age of it.
The social platform that I love the most is Pinterest. Pinterest, unlike other social platforms such as Facebook or Twitter, makes posts show up on dashboards and search results even if they are years old. Through Pinterest, you can get over 10k pageviews per day even in your first-month blogging. But only if you’ll understand how it works. Also, you might find interesting the fact that people use Pinterest to find things that they need. Indeed, 70% of Pinterest users buy products or services that bloggers suggest on their posts, that they promote through Pinterest.

Another Traffic Source: Referral Traffic
Even though I’m only focusing on Social and Organic Traffic at the moment, there’s another very important traffic source that you should consider: Referral Traffic.
Referral Traffic is the one that you get when visitors come to your site after clicking on links to your blog from other websites. For example, other sites that like what you write or sell may post a link recommending your site. You can also try to drive your own referral traffic by writing guest posts on other blogs or by commenting on blogs and adding the link to your website in the comments.
Referral traffic increases the “page rank” of your blog, which boosts it in Google search results. This means that by improving your Referral traffic you also improve your Organic traffic. Also, Referral traffic drives targeted visitors to your website, which may increase your earnings as visitors already know what they could find on your blog when clicking on the link to it.
Step 4: Include Affiliate Links in Your Content
Affiliate marketing is a great tool for monetizing your blog.
Many online companies who sell products or services, usually offer an affiliate program. If you want to be part of the program and start promoting their products (or services) on your blog, all you have to do is sign up for that program. Here’s how it works:
- Sign up for the program and wait for the company to approve you. It generally doesn’t take more than a week (you can generally find the link to the affiliate program of the company in the footer of their website).
- Once you get approved for the affiliate program you can get your unique link that tracks your affiliate code for the product (or service) that you want to promote.
- Include your affiliate link on your blog. You can do this by placing the link in your posts or through banner ads.
- If a readers click on your unique link or on the ad and buy the product you have recommended, you earn a percentage of what they purchased.

The affiliate networks above are all amazing and great if you want to make money blogging, but out of these, the one that I love the most is the Amazon Associates program.
Amazon Associates is an extremely popular affiliate program for both small and big bloggers. Everybody buys from Amazon and the product range is huge, so it’s perfect for every blog niche.
However, the main reason why I love it is the fact that you earn a commission for whatever the buyer, that comes from your blog, buys. This means that if one of your visitors clicks on an affiliate link in your blog, but ends up buying something completely different from the product you suggested, you will earn a commission anyways.
One thing I always recommend doing is using affiliate links to products or services that you truly like and use (or that you would use if you needed them). This element is extremely important if you want to create an engaging and loyal audience around your blog. Otherwise, people who buy products or services through your links might end up disappointed and won’t buy anything you recommend ever again.
Step 5: Build an email list
Building an email list is extremely important for two reasons: protection and promotion.
Protection because Google and Social platforms constantly change their algorithm and, sometimes, it means that the traffic might drop down without you knowing what’s going wrong. “In that situation, your mailing list is the only real protection you have” (as Ramsay Taplin, from Blog Tyrant, states). And this is true: your email subscribers are the only “thing” that is yours and yours only. They are people that subscribed to your list because they are really interested in what you blog about.
Promotion because nothing gets more engagement than emails. If someone has given you their email address it means that they trust you and will have no problem buying something that you suggest in your blog and emails. And, best of all, they’ll help you promote it so you can get more email subscribers.
The best email list builder, suggested by many bloggers, is Convertkit. From my experience, I can say that Convertkit is very easy to use, so it’s perfect for new bloggers.
Step 6: Sell your own products or services
The last step that every single blogger should aim to is selling their own products or services. This method is obviously great because you don’t earn just a commission when selling your products, but you get a full earning. You can sell both digital or “concrete” products: it really depends on your abilities and on your niche.
Digital products can include items like:
- Online courses or workshops
- Images, videos, or music people can use in their own content
- Apps, plugins, or themes
A great example of a profitable digital product is the online course Making Sense of Affiliate Marketing created by Michelle Schroeder–Gardner, owner of the blog Making Sense of Cents. Michelle makes around $65,000 every month from her course, so you can understand how powerful selling your own products and services can be.
Other ways to monetize your blog
Monetize with CPC or CPM Ads
One of the most common ways that bloggers use to make money is through placing ads on their site. There are two popular types of ads:
- CPC/PPC Ads: Cost per click (also called pay per click) ads are usually banners that you place in your sidebar or in the middle of your posts. Each time a reader clicks on the ad, you get paid for that click.
- CPM Ads: Cost per 1,000 impressions ads, are ads that pay you a certain amount of money based on how many people view your ad.
The most popular ads network for placing these types of ads is Google AdSense. With this program, you don’t need to be in direct contact with advertisers. All you have to do is place the banner on your site. Google will then choose ads that are relevant to your content, and interesting for your viewers. There are many other similar ads networks but the one that will probably help you get the most out of the ads is Mediavine. Unfortunately, bloggers can sign up for Mediavine only if they have at least 25k sessions per month. However, many bloggers are able to apply for it after only four months of blogging. So, as soon as you reach the 25k sessions in 30 days goal I highly suggest you apply for it as the earnings you can get from it are five times as big as the ones that you get from Google Adsense. how to make money blogging
