Here are the 5 books every girl boss should read:

She Means Business – Carrie Green

I’ve discovered this book while I was looking for some new books that could help me see business from a new perspective. Intrigued by the beautiful front page I checked out the reviews. Well, just to let you know, I ended up buying it without a second thought.

I’ve never seen a book with so many positive reviews. 96% of the 623 reviews gave it 5/5 stars. This can definitely make you understand how this book was helpful for me and for many other people.

There’s one review in particular that actually made me smile:

“Blown away by this book, it is perhaps my all-time favorite self-help/entrepreneurial book and I am going to read it many times before I am through! I had to get both the audio and paperback versions to use together, and the down to earth insight has me ready to go out and tackle the world. I know Carrie caters to women entrepreneurs (and yes, I am a man), but I would have to place her right at the top of my go-to inspirations down to earth, easy to understand, easy to relate to, and all around sound advice and inspiration. Sorry ladies, but as a guy, I think this book and this woman, … ROCK!” – Sam Baratta

You Are a Badass – Jen Sincero

In this book, Jen Sincero goes through the different ways that we limit ourselves through the stories and believes that we tell ourselves. This book helped me a lot finding what I love doing and what I want to do in my life. You Are a Badass also helped me discover how to achieve my goals and find the right motivation for it. This is the book I always come back to. Whenever I need a motivational boost or a new perspective on my goals I know this book will help me.

On Goodreads I found a comment that perfectly explains my feeling for this book:

“Served with a healthy dose of humor, a smidge of sarcasm and plenty of great quotes, Jen Sincero dishes her take on self-help, self-acceptance and (of course) self-love.

This has all the hallmarks of a Self-Help book – cheesy one-liners and a perky “You CAN do it” attitude. I honestly expected it to be just another cookie cutter how to become the real you. Blah. Needless to say, I was totally ready to hate it.

Yet, the more I read, the more I enjoyed hearing her advice. She’s hilarious. She’s witty. And she’s pretty badass. There were quite a few quotes that articulated concepts that I never fully thought through before:

If you’re serious about changing your life, you’ll find a way. If you’re not, you’ll find an excuse.

You are responsible for what you say and do. You are not responsible for whether or not people freak out about it.

Her real life tie-ins and her examples were absolutely spot on. I busted a gut when she started calling out all those little excuses we tell ourselves:

Sally always says She can’t find a good single man because there aren’t any left out there. Really Sally? All the good single men were hunted down and killed so no matter how many dates you go on or how many times you put on sexy high heels and hang around home depot, you’ll never bump into one? Was the awesome guy your friend Deb just met the lone survivor of the Good Guy Genocide? Absolutely hilarious from cover to cover.” – Miranda Reads

#Girlboss – Sophia Amoruso

Obviously, I had to include this book among the 5 books every girl boss should read. Sophia Amoruso is the actual girl boss. She is the one that has created an empire starting from nothing. Not only this book is great to learn life lessons that’ll help you go after your dreams and take control over your success and your happiness, but it’s also perfect if you want to understand the mindset and the perspectives of real-life girl bosses.

Promising review: “For anyone looking to start a business or just struggling to keep one afloat, this book is a great read. It shows that hard work and good ideas can really pay off. Being a business owner is not for the faint of heart, but the rewards far outweigh the sweat equity when it all comes together and is successful. One thing I really enjoyed about the book is the way failure was handled – if Sophia bought something and it didn’t sell, she learned from her mistakes and allowed the mistakes to steer her the correct direction. She didn’t quit!”

Lean In – Sheryl Sandberg

Sheryl Sandberg is the chief operating officer of Facebook, so she is the ultimate girl boss. Lean In has become a massive cultural phenomenon. The book soared to the top of bestseller lists internationally, creating global conversations about women and ambition. At first, I thought that Leanin wasn’t for me and that only an elite few could relate to it. To the contrary, I was happy to see that the book deals with very important voice issues of leadership and equality that touch everyone.

Promising review:

“This book CHANGED MY LIFE. I had been working in the same position at the same company for the last 12 years wondering why I wasn’t being promoted or approached by competitors. Along with gaining experience over the years and building my own self-confidence, I needed this book to push me to take the next steps. I know this sounds silly and self-absorbed, but when I was reading it, it was like Sandberg was talking directly to me. She gave me insight into some of the things that were happening around me, and some tips on what I could do to change the course of my career.

Within a week of finishing it, I stood up to a male coworker who was minimizing and deflating everything I said in a meeting in front of my manager and colleagues. Pre-book I probably would have just let it go and been deferential even though I knew I was right. I didn’t back down on my position, but I remained calm and logical and was still friendly. He, on the other hand, became angry and raised his voice. I asked him why he was becoming so emotional about the topic, and that question disarmed him completely. He said, “you’re right, I’m sorry.” Later he came to my office and apologized again. I know he didn’t like it, and I don’t think his apology was sincere, but I know I at least gleaned some respect from him and my colleagues.

Later I noticed in another meeting in which a female coworker and I were presenting, several male audience members kept interrupting us despite the fact that we were supposed to be teaching them the material. I finally stepped in and said, “Gentlemen, thanks for your insights but we’re going to hold questions and comments until the end.” They shut up.”

Girl Code – Cara Alwill Leyba

If you ever felt alone, grab this book and you’ll find the support you were looking for. No matter where you are in your career, I know you’re going to get a lot from this book.

Girl Code emphasizes the idea that women need to empower each other. And this is extremely true. Women need to stop competing and feeling jealous when another succeeds. There is plenty of success available for many people, and if we support each other’s dreams, everyone wins. This book teaches how powerful women can be when they stand together and empower each other to reach their full potential.

The book has around 10 interviews with successful females entrepreneurs. This means that Girl Code book will not teach you how to build a multimillion-dollar business. But it will definitely teach you how to build confidence in yourself and find your purpose in life.

It makes you understand that you can accomplish anything as long as you give it as much as you can.

Promising review:

“This book is seriously amazing and one I will recommend to all my friends. Being a female entrepreneur can be ridiculously tough and one of the toughest parts can be dealing with other women. When women show up and support others crazy amazing things can happen! This book helps you roadmap your personal thoughts and dreams to be a better you by helping you connect with yourself and your why. Through truly connecting with your why and forgetting jealousy of others you can find a space where you support those around you instead of beating them down. So so good! Love Cara!” – Kat
