And thinking about how much you’ll have to wait for your next vacation could make things even worse. No matter how amazing your job is going back to work after having such a good time is always hard. But if you already hate your job, beating the post-vacation slump could be a real struggle.
For some people going back to work or school is so hard they could feel extremely stressed and anxious. However, that’s definitely not what we want to get from a vacation. I mean, we supposedly take it to reduce any signs of burnout. So what’s the point of it if we go back to work to be even more stressed?
You should consider yourself lucky (and a little bit crazy as well) if you’re actually one of the very few people who prefer going back to work rather than staying on vacation. For the rest (and most) of you who would definitely love a longer vacation, don’t worry: you’re totally normal. Feeling a little nostalgic and bummed is the obvious consequence of a nice vacation. However, that should not evolve in something else.

Before You Leave
Get rid of those bothersome tasks you keep putting off
In the days or weeks leading up to your vacation, try to complete all the tasks you know will cause you lingering anxiety or stress. that could be responding to all your pending emails, finally painting your house’s walls, or even just calling the dentist to schedule an appointment. Basically, you should accomplish all those things you have been putting off for a long time and that you know will constantly come to your mind while on vacation and make you feel stressed and anxious.
Tell people you’re going on vacation
I’m not saying you have to tell everyone you know you’re going on vacation (everybody would hate you for bragging about it). What I’m saying is that you should notify the right people to let them know you’re taking some time off.
Send emails to your colleagues and clients to let them know the period of time you’ll be gone on vacation. Add information on how and when to contact you, maybe giving the possibility to email you, letting people know when you’ll be able to get back to them and fulfill their requests.
If you won’t share these information people will contact you expecting a quick answer and will also think they can commit you responsibilities you won’t be able to take care of. So, in order to enjoy your vacation and put work aside be sure you let people know you won’t be available for that period of time. Vacation will definitely be much more pleasant. Plus, you won’t have to apologize for your unexplained absence, so the post-vacation slump will be much easier to deal with.
Make a list
Another great way of beating the post-vacation slump and keeping stress away is making a list of all the things you need to do after the actual vacation. These are all those things you can’t or don’t have to do before your vacation. Keep a notebook with you wherever you go so that you can write all the tasks as soon as they come to your mind.
Doing so you’ll keep track of all the things you have to do without having to constantly remember about them while on vacation. All you have to do on vacation is relax and have fun, not constantly remind yourself of things you have to do and get stressed out because you know you won’t remember them.
Disconnect from work
In order to reap all the benefits of your vacation, try to disconnect from the stresses of work. Disable your push notifications that constantly remind you of your responsibilities, don’t bring your phone with you wherever you go and try to fully live your vacation experiencing new things that help you take your mind off work.
If it’s not possible for you to completely unplug from work, then you should at least schedule your work time. You could, for example, give yourself an hour after lunch to check your emails and get back to people who contacted you. This strategy will help you take care of your responsibilities without making them your priority even while on vacation.
If possible, plan to arrive home a couple of days before fully going back into your daily routine and hence work. This way you’ll be able to recover from the travel fatigue and jet lag. You’ll also be able to run errands (such as going grocery shopping, do the laundry, etc.) easy and slow.
Don’t set high expectations for yourself thinking you can accomplish the impossible just because you’re finally free from the stress you had before your vacation. Understand that you need some time to adjust to your “normal life” again.
If you start feeling overwhelmed by the number of things you have to do, just grab the list you made before and while on vacation. This will help you focus on the individual tasks and getting things done will be much easier.
A great way to beat the post-vacation slump, once you’re back into your daily routine and you feel like you can’t do it, is getting excited about new things. How? Get a brand new planner, buy tickets to a concert, plan your next vacation (even if it’s still 6 months away), or even just a trip or a spa weekend.
Even the smallest things that get you excited can totally boost your mood and help you get over the post-vacation slump in a few minutes.
Take care of your body

Also, if you haven’t had the chance to do something you wanted to do on vacation, don’t keep regretting about it. Instead, find a way to do it in the future and start planning your days looking at them with a positive attitude.
