Job interviews are stressful, uncomfortable and nervewracking for almost everyone. It’s a hard situation because you want to make a good impression and possibly get the job, but it is hard to stay calm in scenarios like this. That’s why many people find themselves looking for job interview tips the night before the interview itself, in a race against the pressure of doing well.
Well, for anxious people, this experience can be even harder to face. Nevertheless, by looking at it with a clear mind you can easily realize how silly it is to be scared of a situation that is not actually that bad and that could totally be seen as a normal and interesting conversation between two people who, in fact, want the same thing.
That’s why today I’m going to share with you all a few job interview tips that can help you cope with anxiety and maybe look at job interviews from a completely different point of view.

A well-prepared interviewee has an immediate advantage in an interview, this is why this is the most important out of all these job interview tips.
But Don’t Prepare Your Answers
That doesn’t mean you should prepare your answers or anything like that. In fact, I think that by doing so, you actually prepare yourself to only answering the questions you thought you would get asked. This can lead to you not being able to answer any other question because you were not ready to do so. The best thing to do is know what you’re doing and answer the questions spontaneously. This will also show your interviewer your interest in the job as you’re not going to sound like a robot who learned all the answers by heart.
How to Really Be Prepared
The only way to be prepared for an interview is by knowing which are the documents your interviewer required or that he/she might be interested in. Being well-prepared, informed and proactive will reduce your anxiety for the interview. Generally, these are the things that you should need during the interview (however, always ask and search for informations about this aspect):
- cover letter
- business cards
- a pen and notepad
Be on Time
Being late is a huge stress factor, especially when you don’t know what to expect and you want to make a good impression. That’s why being on time is so important, without considering that it’s also a form of respect and a way to show that you’re serious and really interested in the job.
Oh, and if you don’t know it, being on time actually means that you should arrive to the place of the meeting about five minutes earlier.
If you’re one of those people who are pathologically late, be sure to have everything ready by the night before the interview. Decide what you’re going to wear and lay it out so that you’re not going to have any second thoughts. Set the alarm at a reasonable hour and go to sleep early, so that you won’t need to hit snooze.
Chewing gum makes your brain believe you are eating. This is a great trick (and my favorite among these job interview tips) to reduce stress and get rid of anxiety, as chewing makes the brain think you’re in a safe environment and in a state of calm. Chewing gum can also improve alertness, probably because it stimulates the senses by involving taste, smell, and touch.

Behave the Way You Want to Feel
Emotions are a huge factor in the way we behave and on how we look on the outside from the interviewer’s perspective. The way you feel is probably evident in your outward actions.
However, this is actually a two-way street. In fact, the way you act can affect your emotions and make your mind believe things that do not correspond to reality. So, if, for example, you smile a lot, your mind will actually begin experiencing that emotion and you’ll probably end up feeling happier.
You can try to use this technique to change your approach to the interview by tricking your mind into thinking you’re calm and ready for it.
Imagine the Interviewer Is an Interested Person
During an interview, people generally tend to act and sound like they’re in a slaughterhouse. Try to acknowledge the fact that your interviewer is a person as well. In addition, he’s working to find someone who could be a good fit for the job, so he’s not there to kill you, but he’ll be more than happy to find the right candidate in the person he’s talking to.
In order to attenuate your anxiety, look at the interviewer as a close person you know and respect. This will help you talk in a friendly and natural manner, but maintaining respect and professionalism.
Quick note: always remember that you shouldn’t worry too much about your interview. At the end of the day, the worst thing that could happen to you is not getting that job. But maybe that’s the sign that something better is coming for you!
